Job description
Design / Project Engineer employees their skills / experience to research and develop ideas for new products, mid-life redesigns, and customisations. You will make changes to existing products to improve performance, efficiency and reduce costs (VA/VE). Also, acting as project manager, you will plan and manage projects during the design, development, tooling and production ramp-up stages, to make sure projects are completed on time, within scope and budget.
Typical work activities
A typical day for a design / project engineer can be busy and varied and may involve one or more of the following:
·meeting with clients to establish the design brief: the concept, performance and production criteria
·agree the timescales, costs and resources needed
·sketching initial design ideas
·brainstorming as part of a team or developing design concepts using 2D and 3D CAD (SolidWorks experience preferred)
·identifying the suitability and availability of materials
·create technical drawings and produce design specifications, including parts lists and costings
·modifying designs and re-testing - this process can go through several stages before a product is ready for manufacture or installation
·negotiate with contractors and suppliers for materials and services
·make sure that each stage of the project is progressing on time, on budget and to the right quality standards

Qualifications, Skills & Experience
You would normally need a foundation degree, BTEC HNC/HND or degree to become a design / project engineer in a relevant engineering subject.
It will be advantageous to have relevant experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems, SolidWorks and FastCAD.
Salary and benefits
·Basic Salary would usually be between £20,000 and £25,000 a year.
·Company and Objective Bonuses could increase this by around £2,000 (if achieved).
